The City of Clinton police officers have authority to make arrests regarding traffic offenses and misdemeanor criminal violations. These violations are filed with the Clinton Municipal Court. They are not the only ones with jurisdiction here, so because of its location within Hinds County, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department can make arrests as well. The Mississippi Highway Patrol also has legal authority within the city of Clinton. If you venture onto the Natchez Trace Parkway, you have moved into federal territory and the National Park Service Park Rangers have jurisdiction. They’re not just after Yogi Bear.
The Court Clerk and Deputy Court Clerks can help you understand the procedures that take place in Clinton Municipal Court, such as first appearances, payments of fines, and other matters pertaining to the court. They, however, cannot give you legal advice, answer questions about criminal charges, or tell you what will happen should you plead guilty or not. Only licensed attorneys who deal with these matters on a daily basis are qualified to do this. You can call Coxwell & Associates for assistance and advice, and they will be more than happy to talk to you.
