If you are in the city of Jackson, and are charged with traffic or misdemeanor criminal offense, the Jackson Municipal Court has control. Jackson Municipal Court also holds hearings in regards to violations of city ordinances.
Jackson city limits is contained mostly in Hinds County as well as small portion of Madison County and an even smaller portion of Rankin County. They stretch from US Highway 220 on the west to Interstate 55 and US Highway 51on the east. If you are charged with a traffic violation or any criminal offense within the 106.8 square miles of land that make up Jackson, your appearance date will be in the Jackson Municipal Court. Should someone be accused of a felony, his or her initial appearance will also take place at Jackson Municipal Court.
The Jackson Police Department have jurisdiction, and any arrests that they make will be resolved in the Jackson Municipal Court. They Hinds County Sheriff’s Department officers as well as the Mississippi Highway Patrol have the authority to make arrests in the city of Jackson too.
