Jurisdiction over both civil actions concerning amounts of money $3,500 or less and misdemeanor criminal charges that take place outside of the Madison city limits lies with the Madison County Justice Court. Traffic offenses that are committed outside the Madison city limits are resolved in the Madison County Justice Court as well.
Civil cases are cases are cases in which two or more people have a disagreement over a matter. A criminal case, on the other hand, occurs between the State of Mississippi and a person who is accused of committing a misdemeanor outside Madison, The City. Madison is found just north of Ridgeland and Jackson and just south of Canton. Should you be accused of a civil problem for $3,500 or less or a misdemeanor or traffic offense outside the city of Madison your hearing will be held in Madison County Justice Court. Felony case bond hearings and preliminary hearings will also be held by one of the Madison County Justice Court Judge.
Madison County Constables have principal jurisdiction over arrests that are heard in the Madison County Justice Court. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department as well as the Mississippi Highway Patrol also can make arrests in this area.
