Dangerous Drugs

At Coxwell & Associates, located in Jackson, Mississippi, our medical negligence attorneys have exceptional experience in several types of pharmaceutical litigation claims. Some of these pharmaceutical litigation claims include the following products or medications.

Transvaginal Mesh Implants (TVM): This implant is used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence in women. The implant is produced by several medical device manufacturers, including: Johnson & Johnson, CR Bard, American Medical Systems, and Boston Scientific. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) states that 4,000 injury reports were filed between 2005 and 2010. Additionally, the failure rate for TVM is estimated to be as high as 10%.

Some common complications from a TVM can include: urinary problems, pain during sexual intercourse, recurrence of condition, inflammation and scarring, and mesh erosion through vaginal lining. The most common symptom to look for if you believe your TVM has failed is pelvic pain. Other common symptoms include unusual bleeding and a return of the underlying condition.

DePuy Hip Implants: Two major products from DePuy, the ASR Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System are currently being recalled. The ASR is a metal on metal hip replacement system, which is believed to produce excessive metallic debris as it wears. This debris can cause serious inflammation, leading to damage in the surrounding muscle and soft tissue, which can compromise subsequent revision surgeries. Additionally, the metal on metal system can also create a condition called cobaltism, or an excessive amount of cobalt in the body. This condition can cause a variety of very serious symptoms, including: blindness, convulsions, headaches, vertigo, and deafness.

The National Joint Registry of England and Wales reports that within 5 years, 1 in 8 patients who received the recalled hip replacement will need a revision surgery. DePuy Orthopedics estimated that approximately 10,000 patients will need a revision surgery after receiving the recalled parts. Some symptoms to look for include difficulty walking, thigh pain, and pain when standing from a seated position.

Actos Injuries: Also known as Pioglitazone, this drug is used to treat Type II diabetes. It works by decreasing the amount of sugar in the blood and has been found to be most effective when used in combination with a lifestyle change. Some common side effects of this medication include upper respiratory tract infection, muscle aches, and headaches. One of the more severe side effects is fluid accumulation (edema), which can occur when the medication is combined with insulin. This fluid accumulation can lead to or worsen congestive heart failure. In 2010, the American Heart Association linked Actos with an increased risk of death from congestive heart failure.

There are many symptoms of congestive heart failure, including:

  • Swelling of the hands or feet
  • Unusual or sudden weight gain
  • Trouble breathing during activity or while lying down
  • Unusual fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Swelling of the abdomen
  • Rapid or irregular heart beat.

Byetta Injuries: Also known as Exenatide, this drug is an injectable diabetes medication used to control blood sugar levels in type II diabetics. This drug has been linked to pancreatic cancer and a 2011 study published in Gastroenterology reported that the use of Byetta increased the risk for pancreatic cancer by nearly three times. In March of 2013, the FDA announced it would investigate Byetta and the connection with pancreatic cancer.

Some of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Abdominal pain (particularly a dull ache in the upper abdomen)
  • Bloating
  • Dark urine
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Mild jaundice
  • Unexplained weight loss

Testosterone Replacement Therapy: The increasing popularity of testosterone replacement therapy to treat low testosterone, or “low-T” in men has led to further study of possible side effects. A recent medical study found that the unnecessary use of testosterone cream may increase the likelihood of heart attack and stroke in middle-aged men. Coxwell & Associates are investigating these claims now.
