Flowood Drug Defense

Mississippi is harsh on citizens charged with drug related crimes and the city of Flowood is no different. In an effort to alleviate criminal conduct and drug use, Flowood’s police department has two (2) school resource officers. These two officers work all crimes committed by or involving middle school or high school students in Flowood. Additionally, these two officers escort the middle and high school teams to sporting events, direct traffic at the schools, and participate in other special events in Flowood’s schools.

The police department of Flowood is located at 2101 Airport Rd, Suite B. While the office hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM weekdays, the officers of Flowood are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2010, Flowood’s police department had 48 officers. This police department is overseen by Chief of Police Johnny DeWitt and consists of 4 divisions: patrol division, traffic division, bike patrol, and the canine division. Each of these divisions works to keep Flowood’s crime rate low and its citizens safe. These officers must pass a physical fitness test based on their age and gender by 50% that includes a 1.5 mile run, push ups, agility run, and trunk flex exercises.

The patrol division of Flowood’s police department is the division Flowood’s citizens see most often. This division has twenty (20) officers that each work twelve (12) hour shifts where they respond to emergency calls, investigate crime scenes, direct traffic, assist in traffic accident investigations, and use radar guns to catch citizens that speed. In addition, four (4) officers serve as the bike patrol division for Flowood where they monitor neighborhoods, shopping centers, and special events. These Flowood officers are supervised by four (4) sergeants and four (4) corporals. The traffic division of Flowood’s police department also uses radars to catch citizens that speed, directs traffic, and investigates traffic accidents. The one (1) sergeant and three (3) officers in this unit also help direct traffic flow for special events like parades or funeral services. But these officers get to patrol Flowood on motorcycles.

Flowood’s police department also utilizes canines in its protection of the city. These three (3) dogs, along with their human handlers, help find people, drugs, and conduct building searches. This division works in conjunction with the Criminal Investigations Division/Narcotics. These investigative detectives interrogate witnesses and suspects, prepare case reports, process and submit evidence found at crime scenes, conduct search and arrest warrants, give testimony in court, and conduct surveillance.

Here at Coxwell & Associates, we do our best to make sure all of our clients are fully informed of their rights and their charges. This is especially true when our clients have been charged or arrested on a drug related offense. It’s important to know that usually, if the drugs found in connection with your charge suggest it was for personal use, then Flowood police will more than likely charge you with a misdemeanor. A misdemeanor conviction can get you up to six (6) months in jail or a fine up to one thousand ($1,000) dollars. Whether or not that will happen depends on the amount of the drugs that was found. Each classification of drugs as a misdemeanor has a different amount associated with it. For marijuana, that amount is 30 grams or less. However, drug charges like cocaine, crystal meth, or ecstasy that is .1 grams or less can be charged as a felony or a misdemeanor. One thing that is for sure is that if you have been caught with drug paraphernalia then you will be charged with a misdemeanor. Drug paraphernalia is whatever device an individual uses in order to ingest or use the drug. This can be anything from syringes or pipes to rolling papers.
