Hinds County, Mississippi is one of the most recognized counties in the State because it is home to the Jackson, MS, and the State Capitol. Hinds County was named after General Thomas Hinds who gained fame in the Battle of New Orleans. According to the 2010 Census Hinds County has a population of 245,285. The County has suffered just over a 2% drop in population since the last Census. Many of the residents of Hinds have left Jackson and moved into the surrounding suburbs in Madison County. The County houses many cities in the state including Jackson, Clinton, Bolton, Raymond, Byram, Terry, Edwards, Learned, Utica, and Terry. The County is divided into two judicial districts. The First Judicial Distict is located in Jackson and the Second Judicial District is housed in Raymond. Hinds County also contains many well-known educational institutions such as Belhaven, Hinds Community College, Jackson State University, Millsaps College, Mississippi College and Mississippi College School of Law, Tugaloo College, University of Mississippi Medical Center, Wesley Bible College, and the Reformed Theological Seminary.
