International Terrorism
International terrorism is a type of federal charge that is typically associated with acts of violence that happen outside of the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S., but still violate or would violate criminal laws if committed within U.S. jurisdiction. There are the types of crimes we associate with mass destruction, assassination, kidnapping, intimidation and coercion for the express purpose of intimidating governmental policy or impacting public or civilian life. These crimes also traditionally transcend national boundaries in terms of the intended victims of coercion.
Domestic Terrorism
Domestic terrorism is something we see much more often within our own territorial jurisdiction. These are criminal acts that violate U.S. criminal laws and or that are dangerous to human life. These crimes could be assassination, kidnapping, intimidation or mass destruction to intimidate public or private officials. Domestic terrorism happens within the territorial jurisdiction of the U.S. Listed below are just some of the different types of crimes that can be associated with acts of terrorism and terrorism cases.
Crimes Associated with Terrorism
- Building or detonating bombs
- Chemical attacks
- Possession of bomb-making materials
- Spreading radioactive materials
- Possession of chemical or biological weapons
- Harboring a terrorist
- Biological attacks
- Making a terrorist threat
- Providing financial support to terror attacks
Federal Agencies Associated With Terrorism Charges
In addition to local, state and traditional federal law enforcement and investigative agencies, you could also be dealing with additional federal agencies throughout the course of a terrorism charge case. Whether it’s the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), National Security Agency (NSA) or even the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), cases involving terrorism charges are often complex and involve a lot of different government agencies.
Criminal Penalties Associated With Terrorism Charges
Since acts of terrorism can vary widely, it’s nearly impossible to say for sure what kind of penalties somebody convicted of terrorism charges could be facing. There is one thing that is for certain. The U.S. takes crimes of terrorism very seriously right now, and if convicted of whatever criminal charges are associated with your terrorism case, you’re likely going to be facing the max of any potential penalties. This is why it’s absolutely essential to have a skilled criminal defense attorney on your side as soon as possible. You could get anywhere from a few years behind bars up to life in prison or even the death penalty. For those that fund terrorism financially, you could be looking at up to 20 years behind bars, even if you weren’t physically involved in perpetrating the crime whatsoever.
Don’t Let Fear and Cultural Bias Send You to Prison
With fear, cultural bias and nationalism at an all time high, it’s doubtful that you could have a completely unbiased fair jury trial by your peers. Perhaps, more than any other type of charges, you need somebody in your corner who has proven experience and skills to fight aggressively for your rights. You deserve a fair trial, and sadly, that’s a tall order in this day and age. The sooner you get in touch with a criminal defense lawyer the better, and make sure your lawyer is present before you talk to any federal investigators.
