Terry, Mississippi

The City of Terry, Hinds County, Mississippi

welcome to Terry

The City of Terry is the southern-most city in Hinds County. According to the 2010 census, just over 1,000 people call Terry, Mississippi home. Originally known as “Dry Grove”, Terry was settled in 1811.

Terry is “famous” for being recognized as the birthplace of influential blues musician Tommy Johnson. Terry was also home to Albert G. Brown, the 14th governor of Mississippi. Considered progressive for his time in his thoughts and views on public education and mental health treatment, Governor Brown has a street named after him in the downtown area.

Terry High School keeps the city busy. Recently classified as a 6A high school, Terry High currently educates more than 1,000 students. During football and baseball season, the city of Terry hosts parents and students from across the state.

While in Terry, be sure to check out the Terry Depot. This train station was built in the early 1880’s by the Illinois Central Railroad. The town of Terry was established when the railroad was built through the area.

Recently Terry saw Byram, its neighbor to the north, incorporate into its own city. Working together with the Byram Police Department and the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department, the Terry Police Department works hard to serve its citizens. As a result, more businesses have started along Interstate 55.

The Terry Police Department is located at 129 Railroad Avenue. Juan Gray is the current Police Chief in Terry. Arrests that occur in the city of Terry detain individuals charged with crimes at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond, Mississippi.
