6 Significant Symptoms of Hernia Mesh Infection

Aid

The use of mesh in hernia repairs started becoming popular in the 80’s, and today more than 90 percent of all hernia repairs are conducted using this mesh. So, while the use of this mesh has had largely positive outcomes for patients (including a shorter time on the operating table and faster recovery times), the one downside that has plagued doctors and surgeons for the last few years is the increasing instance of infections in mesh hernia patients. If you have had a hernia operation and surgical mesh was used, it’s important to know which symptoms to look for in the case of a hernia mesh infection. The sooner you catch it, the sooner you can fight it.

What are the chances of me getting an infection post-hernia op?

Studies have shown that the odds of a mesh-related infection after your hernia repair is between one and eight percent. What’s good to know is that there are certain signs and symptoms which will alert you to the infection, allowing for a timely intervention.

If you do show any of these signs post hernia op, you may be eligible to pursue a hernia mesh lawsuit:

Your wound is not healing like it should

However your hernia is repaired, it’s going to hurt for a while and you won’t be running any marathons anytime soon. But you must still pay attention to how you are feeling and how your surgical incision is healing. If your incision is sore or tender and looks like it may be infected, go see your doctor immediately. An infected hernia mesh might well be responsible for your wound not healing like it should.

Inflammation

While you can expect to feel a bit tender post-op, if your stomach feels particularly sore and sensitive after surgery, this could be a case of inflammation. Mesh is made from synthetic substances including Polypropylene, which can cause internal swelling. For some this pain can be bearable, for some it can be chronic. Either way, it is probably a symptom of a mesh infection.

Flu-like symptoms

We all know what an infection feels like. It feels horrible. The infection may be localized to your mouth or hernia mesh, but once the infection sets in it will affect your entire system. This is when your body steps in and tries to fight the infection, resulting in your flu-like symptoms. Expect to experience chills, fever, nausea and sometimes vomiting. The moment you start feeling poorly, see your doctor immediately. Don’t wait for it to pass.

Chronic pain

If you are experiencing chronic pain, especially in the groin area, this could mean your hernia mesh is infected. This pain can prevent you from running simple errands like grocery shopping or cooking, and if it continues unchecked can cause nerve damage. See your doctor immediately.

Incision warmth

If your incision is not showing any visible signs of infection, but feels unusually warm, have it checked out as it could be the result of a hernia mesh infection.

Hernias occur pretty regularly. But most often, if they’re caught in time, they can be easily repaired. They do, however, have a nasty habit of recurring, so surgeons have started using surgical mesh to further strengthen these repairs, reducing the chance of a recurrence in the process. Many of these mesh products are pushed to market without adequate testing, leading to post-op complications in some patients. Even when the FDA does become aware of a defective product, they are slow to act. That’s why it’s important to educate yourself on the dangers of hernia mesh, warn others and be aware of your legal rights if you do suffer complications.

It might be time to consider a hernia mesh lawsuit

To date, there have been more than 3000 hernia mesh lawsuits that have come before the Federal courts after patients have suffered an infection as a result of their hernia mesh repair. Complications included infections and in some cases organ damage. These settlements have totalled millions of dollars over the last few years.
